How long have you been doing what you do, and how did you become design experts providing creative solutions for do-gooders?
To answer this question about us, we’d love to share a few defining moments that brought us to where we are today—designing products and services that help do-gooders like you get noticed.
We’ve both been artists since we were kids. It’s the common thread throughout our rocky journey, leading us from surviving difficult childhoods to being kickass entrepreneurs with a mission.
Growing up in Connecticut, Colleen obtained a degree in graphic design and illustration. Art has helped her cope with the depression she suffered from since she was a child.
After moving to Colorado, Colleen started contracting as a designer for a management consulting company. While employed there, she traveled constantly for three years, until she had to get off the road due to chronic fatigue syndrome.
To support herself while she recovered, she started doing freelance work in 1996, which she has been doing ever since.
In 2006, Colleen went back to college to study product design and learnt metal smithing. She moved to California in 2012, where she started designing jewelry.
Born and raised in Northern Germany, Alex has practiced both fine arts and performing arts since childhood, with writing being her greatest passion.
As a pre-teen she began having epileptic seizures which led to depression and anxiety disorder, but also to her career in advocacy. To cope with insomnia resulting from childhood epilepsy, she began telling herself intricate stories, which she later turned into novels.
Self-taught with the exception of a certificate course in graphic design, Alex designed and wrote her first lifestyle blog in 2001 and has been a freelance designer and writer ever since.
In 2012, she moved to California, where she worked for an international think tank as a communications and design manager while she wrote her first novel.
How we became Alex + Colleen
Our most recent defining moment happened in March 2019—18th of March to be exact—the day we met. Earlier that month, we both wanted to learn how to build a business (Colleen with her jewelry and Alex with her books) which led us to sign up for Marie Forleo’s B-School program.
Feeling a little lost and disheartened, we hoped to connect with other women who shared our experience—and found each other.
Despite growing up in different cultures and environments, we clicked right away, like long lost friends, reunited at last. We are dedicated to continuous self-development and mindset training, and in the few short months since meeting each other we made more progress in our lives and businesses than we’ve made in decades.
Our weekly masterminds turned into daily check-ins, until July 26, 2019, when we both said, “Hey, you wanna start a business together?”
“Under two conditions: 1.) Our work supports mental health awareness. And 2.) We only work with clients whose business or mission also contributes to the greater good.”
The rest, as they say, is history.
We work with people just like you who run a business that supports a good cause, either directly or as part of your corporate social responsibility program. It’s our mission to help you and your cause stand out so you get the attention, support, and funds you need.
We love to work with:
- Creative entrepreneurs & professionals
- Health & Wellness practitioners
- Small businesses and solopreneurs on a mission.
Although we come with decades of experience and passion for design and the creative process, we care about making the world a better place through our products and services, just like you. We want to champion you and your cause, giving it the attention it deserves.
Our products and services are for people who are absolutely excited and serious about changing the world with their business. We are highly selective about who we take on as a client, and we prescreen all potential clients to make sure that working together is going to be a great experience for all of us.
A few things we expect from everyone we work with:
- You understand and see the value in the work we do.
- You are honest, open-minded, and respectful.
- You have reasonable expectations.
- Your project fits the size and scope of our business.
- You can pay half of the fee upfront and the other half upon completion.
If you aren’t ready to work with us yet, that’s ok, we also offer a lot of free content and advice in our newsletter and over on our blog.
Yes, we would love to get on the phone with you. Please leave us a message with your contact information so we can schedule an info session. We can’t wait to work with you and are honored to be the one to help you. Let’s get going!
